I recently did a few changes to the decor in my bedroom. Nothing major, just new artwork and bedding. But it made a HUGE difference! Weeks later, I still have a feeling of calm serenity when entering my bedroom. The best part? It was super cost-effective!
The new look is more mature. Contrasting textures on the bed give the room a luxurious feel, and the greens (verging on blue) is fresh and energetic.

If you are thinking of freshening up your room, here are some tips for you:
- Watch home renovation shows. They do big changes (usually), but I learned a lot about mixing textures and colors.
- It probably goes without saying, but Pinterest is a great place to start. You may think you want green as your color, but if you do on Pinterest and start picking out only rooms with blue or purple, you may want to rethink your choice.
- Pick a theme. I went with a subtle Fantasy Garden theme. So a lot of nature, with a few items that were a little more magical (yet still ‘grown-up’).
- Texture, texture, texture! For the bedding, mix up the textures. I have a white comforter that is slightly rough and linen-like. So I paired it with a super soft, plush, emerald green throw blanket, and a variety of pillows.
- Keep it consistent. If you want the room to look cohesive, don’t throw in your favorite 2000’s boy-band poster next to an oriental watercolor. Prune what doesn’t belong. You can be eclectic, but it should all meld together. Unless you are trying to be different and odd, in which case, go crazy!
All of the artwork except for the framed prints of the mermaids is artwork that I did. A couple are simple canvas paintings, and the others are digital artwork. I just painted a few old frames (super cheap ones I got years ago), printed out my artwork, and hung it in a balanced layout.
